Jim Dabakis is the chairman of the Utah Democratic Party. He is the first openly gay chairman in Utah, has made a point of reaching out to the Mormon community and was instrumental in establishing the LDS Democrats Caucus. He represents the state’s 2nd senate district in the Utah State Senate.
Jim was raised Greek Orthodox and then baptized into the Mormon Church at the age of eleven. In 1971, he enrolled at Brigham Young University and sought guidance from Mark E. Petersen, one of the Church’s apostles, about his homosexuality. He served in the San Francisco Bay Area mission and has since ceased to be a practicing Mormon.
